Montgomery County is a county located in the east-central part of the state of Texas. It is named after the town of Montgomery, which was the first county seat. The county has a population of approximately 590,000 people and covers an area of 1,077 square miles. The county seat is Conroe, which is located approximately 40 miles north of Houston. The Montgomery County court system consists of several courts that handle different types of cases. The district courts are the highest trial courts in the county and have jurisdiction over felony criminal cases and civil cases with damages over $200. The county courts at law handle misdemeanor criminal cases and civil cases with damages between $200 and $100,000. The justice of the peace courts handle small claims cases with damages up to $10,000 and minor criminal offenses. The Montgomery County Courthouse is located at 301 North Thompson Street in Conroe and houses the district courts, county courts at law, and justice of the peace courts. The courthouse is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
