What Should I Know About Houston Construction Permits?

July 8, 2024

If you are going to take on a new project, you need the proper construction permits. Skipping this step is going to get you in a lot of trouble. If you’re confused about the permit application process, we may be able to help. Our Harris County construction lawyers have plenty of experience helping local businesses do everything by the book.

When Are Construction Permits Needed?

Construction permits are needed for just about any kind of construction work. No job is too small or insignificant in the eyes of local regulators. Whether you are making something new or adding onto an existing structure, you need to have the proper permits. They are required for:

New construction : If you’re building a new home, commercial building, or anything else, you’ll need a permit.

Some remodeling work : If you need to add or remove a wall or make a bigger opening for a window or door, that work requires a permit.

Making additions : Permits are often required if you are adding something to a property. This can include retaining walls, fences, swimming pools, and carports.

Replacement of aging structures : Putting on a new roof or replacing an old deck will also require the proper permits.

Demolitions : That’s right. You even need to get permission if you’re not building anything and just taking down an existing structure!

It’s always a good idea to figure out if any work you’re doing requires permits before you get started. Delaying a project while you get some paperwork sorted out is never ideal.

How Do You Get Construction Permits in Houston?

In order to get the construction permits you need, you must make an application to the city of Houston. You have to include everything that you can about your plans and their potential impact. Once you show the city what you plan to do and that you have done your research before jumping into this new project, regulators can make a proper evaluation.

If you are approved, the Houston Permitting Center will award you the proper credentials. If there is an issue with your application, you can be given a chance to fix it and try to apply for the required construction permits again.

Do I Need a Lawyer?

Getting the right permits can sometimes be a confusing process. Fortunately, our attorneys have a lot of experience with this city’s regulators and we know a lot about local construction requirements. If you work with us, we can help you prepare your application and ensure that you are seeking out the right kinds of construction permits.
